+ How do I know whether my basement or crawl space needs waterproofing?
Common signs are a musty smell, dampness or water along the walls or floor, white mineral deposits on masonry, standing water or wet insulation in a crawl space, and mold or mildew. If you notice any of these, an inspection can find where the moisture is coming from.
+ What is the difference between waterproofing a basement and a crawl space?
A basement usually needs water kept out or collected and removed, with drainage, sealing and a sump pump. A crawl space often also needs a sealed ground cover and moisture control, because bare soil releases humidity into the house. The right plan depends on the space and the source of the water.
+ Why does water appear only after heavy rain?
That usually points to surface water: gutters, downspouts or grading that send rain toward the foundation. Fixing drainage outside is often the first step. If water keeps coming in during dry weather, the cause is more likely groundwater or a leak.
+ Is a sump pump enough on its own?
A sump pump removes water that has collected in a pit, but the pit needs drains or a low point to receive the water. It is one part of a waterproofing plan, and it needs testing and maintenance.
